MiG-21 Bison Upgraded ,Combat Fighter Aircraft,Indian Air Force
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is a supersonic jet fighter aircraft,designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Sovient Union.It is used as a ground attack aircraft,interceptor and trainer aircraft.
Early versions are considered second-generation jet fighters, while later versions are considered to be third-generation jet fighters. Approximately 60 countries over four continents have flown the MiG-21, and it still serves many nations a half-century after its maiden flight.
It is the most-produced supersonic jet aircraft in aviation history.
Induction in Indian Air Force
In 1961,The Indian Air Force opted to Purchase the Mig-21 over several other Western Competitors. In 1964, the MiG-21 became the first supersonic fighter jet to enter service with the IAF.After the positive response from the Pilots during the 1965 war,India Placed more orders for the fighter jet and invest heavily in building the MiG-21’s maintenance infrastructure and Pilot Training.
Since 1963, India has introduced more than 1,200 MiG fighters into its air force.As of 2013 end ,at least 252 MiG-21s are known to be in operation.However due to accidents and crashes of Mig-21 which results in death of more than 170 Indian Pilots and 40 civilians ,IAF decided to replaced its fleet of Mig-21 with HAL Tejas.
On December 11,2013 India’s second generation supersonic jet fighter,Mig-21 Fl was decommissioned after being service for 50 years.Then after in 2015 ,Mig-21 MF (Type 88) was retires and replaced by HAL Tejas.
MiG-21 Bison is the other one variant in IAF.After the retirement of Mig-21s from IAF,the remaining remaining 150 aircraft,Including Upgraded miG-21 Bisons are scheduled to be phased out by 2022 or 2025 and replaced by HAL Tejas.
Design and Features
The Mig-21 Bison has a length of 14.5 m,wingspan of 7.154 m and height of 4m.It can accommodate only one pilot.The aircraft has a delta wing configuration. The fuselage is semi-monocoque with an elliptical profile.
The air flow to the engine is regulated by an inlet cone in the air intake. For speeds higher than Mach 1.9 the cone moves to the maximum forward position.The empennage of the MiG-21 consists of a vertical stabilizer, a stabilator and a small fin on the bottom of the tail to improve yaw control. The MiG-21 uses a tricycle type undercarriage.The aricraft has three airbrakes,two at front and one at the back.
The Cabin is Pressurised and air conditioned.The cabin canopy Is hinged at front.For ejecting the SK-1 ejection seat is there.
The Mig-21 Bison is integrated with Jay Bird Radar ,RWR and Ballistic Bombsight.
Engine and Performance
The aircraft is powered by Tumansky R-11f-300 Engine capable of producing 12,675 lb of thrust with afterburner.The aircraft has maximum takeoff weight of 8,825 kg.It has internal fuel capacity of 2364 kg and also there are drop tanks integrated with it for external stores.
It can cruise with the maximum speed of 2175 km/h (1351.48 mph ,Mach 2.0).The operational range of aircraft is 1210 km (751 miles).It has service ceiling and rate of climb 17,800 m and 225 m/s respectively.The aircraft has landing speed of 190 kts with brake parachute.
MiG-21 Bison has equipped with 1x internal 23 mm GSh-23 Cannon gun.Also there are 2 x R-27R1 or R-27T or x Vympel R-77 AAM or 2 x 500 kg bombs integrated because of its ground attack role.
