LCA Tejas Multirole Fighter ,Indian Airforce Strength
The Tejas single-seat,single-engine,lightweight ,high agility supersonic multirole fighter aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It comes from Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ,programme which began in 1980s to replace the India’s ageing Mig-21 Fighters.later on then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee officially named the aircraft as “Tejas” meaning “Radiant”.
The Tejas took off its maiden flight in January 4,2001 and introduced in Indian Air force in January 17,2015.It is the second supersonic fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after HAL HF-24 Marut.Total 16 Tejas are built till January 2015.The design and development programme is being led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) of the Indian Department of Defence with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) as the prime contractor.
Hal will produce six Tejas fighter aircraft between 2015 and 2016 and has plans to increase the production rate at 16 aircrafts per year. It was developed as a single seat fighter aircraft that serves its service to Indian Air force but two seat Tejas is also available that is being used as a Training aircraft.
LCA Tejas Multirole Fighter ,Indian Airforce Strength-Design and features
The Tejas is a Single-engine multirole fighter which features a tailless, compound delta platform and is designed with “relaxed static stability” for enhanced manoeuvrability.Being the smallest,lightweight,single-engine tactical fighter it was originally made with the purpose to serve as an air superiority aircraft with a secondary ground-attack role but its design flexibility permits a variety of guided air-to-surface and anti-shipping weapons to be integrated with it and made it more suitable for multirole and multi-mission capabilities.
The tajas has a tailless aircraft with compound-delta wing configuration platform. This configuration allows the aircraft to minimise the requirement of control surfaces, permits carriage of wider range of external stores and confers better close-combat,high speed,high-alpha performance characteristics than other comparable aircrafts.
The airframe comprised of aluminium-lithium,super-plastically formed titanium and carbon-fibre composites. The lightweight of the aircraft is due to its wing and fin are made up of lightweight carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer.Tejas requires very short runway to fly.
LCA Tejas Multirole Fighter ,Indian Airforce Strength-Avionics and flight control
The Tejas has a night vision (NVG) compatible glass cockpit,CSIR-CSIO domestically developed head-up-display,three 5×5 in multi-function display, two Smart Standby Display Units (SSDU) and a special “get-you-home” panel that provides necessary information for pilot in case of emergency.
The aircraft also equipped with both GPS and ring laser gyroscope based inertial navigation system,an Instrument Landing System(ILS) and a ground proximity warning system based on the Terrain Referenced Navigation (TRN) system. It is also integrated with secure and jam-resistant communication system such as IFF transponder/interrogator,VHF/UHF radios and air-to-air/air-to-ground data links.
The quadruplex digital fly-by-wire control system is responsible for the relaxed static stability with the ease of handling to pilot. The control surfaces are hydraulically actuated and the pure delta wing layout with shoulder mounted wings enhanced the aerodynamic configuration.
The advanced cockpit enhances the comfort level of test pilots. It includes an environmental control system developed by Spectrum Infotech of Bangalore.A helmet-mounted display and sight (HMDS) is also included while the hands on throttle and stick control system minimises pilot workload and maximises situational awareness.
