INS Kolkata,Largest Indigenous Warship Indian Navy
INS Kolkata is the lead ship of the Kolkata-class guided-missile destroyers of the Indian Navy. She was constructed at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), and was handed over to the navy on 10 July 2014 after completing her sea trials. The ship was officially commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a ceremony on 16 August 2014.
The keel of the warship was laid down in September 2003 and the ship was launched in 2006.The 7,500-tonne warship has been designed by the Navy’s design bureau. Her commissioning was originally planned for 2010, but this was delayed to 16 August 2014 as a result of a series of project delays. During her construction at MDL, she was given the designation Yard-701.

The detailed design phase for the class was completed by MDL. Kolkata-class is a follow-on model of the Delhi-class and is fitted with modern weapons and sensor systems. The propulsion system of Delhi-class was also retained with minor upgrades. Most of the systems integrated in the ships are designed and built in India.Aviation facilities include Flight Deck and enclosed hanger.
The Warship has the length of 163m and beam length of 17.4 m with the draft of 6.5m.It can cruise in the oceans wih the speed of 30 knots (56km/h).INS kolkata has estimated crew capacity of 250 and has range of 8000 nautical miles (15,000 km). The destroyers is also equipped with action information system and atmospheric control system. The modern stealth destroyer will demonstrate superior anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities.
INS Kolkata Armaments
The Fighter warship is equipped with 4×8-cell advanced VLS (Vertical Launching System) for holding and firing missiles on mobile platforms on surface ships and submarines.The missile in the VLS is anti-air missile Barak 8 missiles-Total of 32 in number.It can can counter attack aircraft, UAVs and incoming anti-ship missiles.It has range of 0.5 km to 70 km.
The INS kolkata is also armed with 2x 8-cell UVLM(Universal Vertical Launch Module) for 16 BrahMos Supersonic cruise missile .It is the fastest cruise missile in operation and can deploy as anti-ship and land-attack missile.It can hit the target at the speed of Mach 3 (3675km/h) with the accuracy of 1 m at the range of 300-500 km.
The main gun fitted in 1x 76mm Oto Melara SRGM,a naval artillery piece capable of firing 85-120 rounds/min.Specialised ammunition are used in this gun which includes armour piercing, incendiary, directed fragmentation effects, and a guided round marketed as capable of destroying manoeuvring anti-ship missiles.with the high rate of fire and specialised ammunition it is well suited for varies roles such as short-range anti-missile point defence,anti-aircraft,anti-surface and ground support.
Also there is 4x AK-630 automatic naval Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) is fitted. The system’s primary purpose is defence against anti-ship missiles and other precision guided weapons. However it can also be employed against fixed or rotary wing aircraft, ships and other small craft, coastal targets, and floating mines.It can capable of firing 4000-10,000 rounds/min.

The INS kolkata is integrated with 4x Mark 46 torpedo- a anti-submarine warfare torpedo designed to attack high performance submarines .Also the warship is fitted with 2x RBU-6000 anti-submarine rockets.
Sensors and Avionics
The INS kolkata is equipped wit IAI El/M-2248 MF-STAR multi-function Active electronically scanned array naval radar system developed by IAI Elta for maritime installation on warships. It is capable of tracking both air and surface targets and providing fire control guidance.
It is also equipped with Thales LW-08 D-band Star surveillance radar.It is also equipped with two different types of sonar: BEL HUMSA-NG Bow and Nagin active towed array Sonar.The sensors and processing system highly influenced by Bel Electronic Modular Command & Control Application (EMCCA Mk4) combat management system
Electronics and warfare decoys :It includes Elbit System Deseaver MK II counter-measures system and defensive aids suite which operates in various operations such as intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance,advanced electro-optics and communications systems and radios.
Propulsion and Power
The combined as and gas propulsion system integrates twin Zorya M36E gas turbine plant.Four DT-59 reversible gas turbines drive the two propellers via two RG-54 gearboxes.
The two KVM diesel motors are provided by Bergen and Garden Reach. Four Wartsila WCM-1000 generators and Kirloskar AC generators supply onboard electricity. The propulsion system provides a maximum speed of more than 30kt.
