Development

The project of INS kochi was laid down in 25 october 2005.After that the warship was launched on 18 September 2009 by Madhulika verma, wife of Chief of naval Staff,Admiral Nirmal kumar verma. Mazagon Docks used a “pontoon assisted” launching method in which  pontoons are welded to the hull, which give buoyancy and helps overcome tidal constraints. Mazagon plans to use this method for all future ship launches, as the process makes it possible to launch ships with much higher weight.

And Later on 30 September 2015, the largest-ever warship to be built in India, was commissioned by defence minister Manohar Parrikar at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

The first of this class, INS Kolkata, was commissioned in August last year. The third warship, INS Chennai, will be inducted towards end-2016.
