INS Kadmatt Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Corvette ,Indigenously Made,Indian Navy
INS Kadmatt is the Second indigenously Built Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Corvette Designed by Indian Navy’s in-House Organisation,Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) for the Indian Navy under Project 28.
The ship was launched on 25 October 2011 by Mamatha Pallam Raju, the wife of the then Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju.The ship was delivered to the Indian Navy on 26 November 2015 and was commissioned on 7 January 2016 by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan at naval dockyard in Vishakapatnam. The ship would become an integral part of the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command.
This is Second Corvette in the Kamorta class after INS Kamorta which was commenced on 01 March 2006 and was launched on 19 April 2010. Her maiden sea trials commenced in June 2013. She was handed over to the Indian Navy by the Shipbuilders on 12 July 2014 and commissioned in August 2014.
What was Project 28?
Project 28 is the primary project for driving localisation and developing the warship construction industry in India. The aim with this project is to stipulate unprecedented standards while providing opportunities to Indian vendors to develop expertise with the technology. The project, driven by the Navy’s Directorate of Indigenisation, has been delayed by two years with a cost overrun from the originally estimated US$423 million to US$1 billion), primarily to meet this goal.The order for the first four corvettes was placed in 2003, with construction commencing on 12 August 2005.
Design of INS Kadmatt Anti-Submrine Corvette
The ship is almost 90 percent Indigenous and has been constructed using high grade steel (DMR 249A) which is produced by The Steel Authority of India(SAIL). The ships’ design also contains several signature management features, including an ‘x’-shaped hull form to reduce radar cross-section,a low radio,acoustic & magnetic Signature, a raft-mounted propulsion system to reduce vibration, and an infrared signature suppression system.
The ship is 109 metres long and with a displacement of 3500 tons. It is designed to accommodate 17 officers and 106 sailors.
The Main Role of INS Kadmatt is to protect ships in convoys and ports from enemy submarine atacks and act as a anti submarine warfare. It produces low levels of radiated underwater noise which reduces its chances of detection.
It has state of the art equipment which includes the rail-less helo traversing system and foldable hangar door for the integral ASW helicopter which not only increases the strike capability of the ship but also enhances the detection capability manifold.It is equipped with total atmospheric control ventilation system that enables it to fight in any nuclear, biological and chemical warfare environments.
The unique architecture used to fit the engines on a separate mounting reduces its underwater noise thereby making it difficult to detect by sonars of enemy ships and submarines. The IR suppression system reduces the heat emitted by the ship reducing the Infra red signature thereby defending the ship from heat seeking missiles.
Navigation and Guidance System
The Anti-Submarine Corvette INS Kadmatt is fitted with Huma-NG bow mounted sonar that is capable of simultaneous operation in active and passive modes. It is capable of detecting, localizing, classifying and tracking sub-surface targets in both active and passive modes.There is also an Atlas Elktronik towed array sonar set that will be fitted in due course.
The ship also has on-board early warning,navigation and fire control radars besides underwater sensors and interated communication and electronic warfare systems.
Engine and Performance
The Ship is propelled by 2 diesel motors that are capable of producing 14,400 hp. The vessel can reach a maximum speed of 25 knots with an endurance of over 3,400 NM at 18 knots speed .
Armaments and Protection System
The ship’s main role is to protect the nation’s maritime interests against possible submarine attacks and for this it is equipped with an array of wapons like torpedoes,rocket launchers and helicopter.
The INS Kadmaat combat system includes 2 X 533 mm torpedo tube launchers which can fire the advanced Eurotorp MU 90 Impact lightweight torpedo and a pair of 12-barreled RBU6000 rocket depth-charge launchers featuring several design improvements incorporated by Larsen & Toubro.It also has Bharat Electronics IAC MOD C Fire control System.
The Corvette is also integrated with Medium Range gun and Close-in-Weapon System comprising of two multi-barrel guns. The ship would also be installed with short-range Surface-to-Air missiles (SAM) and Active Towed Array Decoy System (ATDS) subsequently. It can also carry an integral ASW helicopter.
