Design and Features
The unique design of INS Astradharani has been formulated by a collaborative effort of Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), IIT Kharagpur and Shoft Shipyard.
The Ship has a Catamaran Hull configuration design :It consists of Two parallel hulls of equal size which significanlty reduces its power requirement. The ship has Multihulled or Twin hulled configuration rather than monohull.Being Ballst-free and lighter than a monohull,a caramaran configuration can have a very shallow draught. The two Hulls in the ship will be much more finar than a monohull’s.It reduces drag and allow faster speed in some conditions ,although the high wetted surface area is detrimental in lower wind speeds.
INS Astradharani is 50 metre (160 ft) long warship. The Ship has a maximum speed of 15 knots (28 km/h).
The ship has a complement of 2 officers, 27 sailors and can carry 13 scientists.
