DRDO Imperial Eagle Unmanned Aerial Vehcile (UAV),Indian Armed Forces
The Imperial Eagle is an Indian light-weight mini-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Aeronautical Development Establishment, the National Aerospace Laboratories and supported by private vendors.Its primary users will be the National Security Guard and the military services.
Developed by city-based (ADE), a unit of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Imperial Eagle will provide our soldiers with an eye in the sky at a time when UAVs are being hailed the stars in major operations, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mainly used for Patrolling, This mini UAV can also be used for surveillance along the border and also for internal security. It is especially useful in places where it is challenging for soldiers to keep a vigil on the enemy.
Development and Testing
According to DRDO spokesperson Ravi Kumar Gupta, the UAV had been tested for several years, and the program has been deemed successful after the flight tests in January 2012.
The Imperial Eagle has already been successfully tested at Pathankot, the police academy in Hyderabad, Indian Armys Northern Command in Jammu and Kashmir, and on the outskirts of Bangalore.THE Imperial Eagle also be tested over the terrain of Chhattisgarh and Andaman and nicobar Islands.
Many components of the UAV, like the autopilot, thermal camera, data links, trackers and the carbon composites air-frame were provided by the private industry in India.
The UAV named as Imperial Eagle because this UAV functions like an eagle and targets specific ground areas by flying at greater heights.
Design and Features
The Imperial Eagle weighs 2.5 kg and can carry either a daylight camera or thermal night vision camera. The five-feet long UAV can capture the image of anything within a 10-km radius through its high definition infrared-enabled camera and transmit images continuously for almost an hour to the ground station. With the fixed wings measuring 1,600 mm, the UAV can fly at 90 km per hour.
It was designed in such a way that a soldier can carry it on his back and launched simply by hand and it can be recoverable through a soft landing. It is completely autonomous and can be programmed with navigational way-points, which can be changed in-flight by the ground control. With a ground tracker system, it is capable of providing continuous imagery of the on-board camera irrespective of the attitude of the aircraft.
The DRDO Imperial Eagle function as an autopilot which is the main advantage of this UAV.The Imperial eagle is fully autonomous.The orientation can be controlled using a dedicated real-time operating system (RTOS).The UAV can be tracked using Automatic Gain Control or GPS-based systems.While patrolling it cans end images of different target area.
Engine and performance
The DRDO imperial Eagle is powered by 1 x BLDC Motor Wing-mounted turboprop .It has empty weight of 2.3 kg and can carry payload of 250 gms.It can fly with the maximum speed of 90 km/h and cruise speed of 40 km/h.It has endurance of 60 minutes.The ferry range of UAV is 15 km and service ceiling is 14,000 ft.
The unique features of this UAV have already caught the attention of several premier institutions and paramilitary wings. National Security Guard (NSG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), The National Institute of Disaster Management and home department of several states have shown interest in procuring the vehicle.
